Coronary sinus ASD occurs when there is a defect in the wall between the coronary sinus and the left atrium. Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an opening between the right and left atria that is normally present. It typically closes shortly after birth. But a PFO is not considered an ASD because no …

The foetal foramen ovale is a connection between the right and left atria of the heart that allows oxygenated blood from the placenta to bypass the non-functioning lungs and directly enter the left side of the heart, where it can be pumped around the foetal body. Stroke can be associated with abnormalities of the atrial septum, specifically patent foramen ovale (PFO), atrial septal defect (ASD), and atrial septal aneurysm (ASA). The relationship between PFO, ASD, or ASA and ischemic neurologic complications will be reviewed here. Treatment is reviewed separately. (See "Treatment of patent foramen ovale Secundum ASD o 50-70% of ASDs o Isolated defect o Twice as common in females o Simple mid-septum ASD Secundum ASD, same hole as PFO but hole is not covered by septum secundum Hole too big or septum secundum insufficient Results from arrested growth of secundum septum or excessive absorption of primum septum Anterosuperior views show incomplete development of the interatrial groove in the superior aspect of the septum in type 2 secundum ASD causing a superiorly located defect (curved green arrow) and an intact septum primum compared with type 1 in which the defect is central in the septum primum (curved red arrow) but the superior groove is well formed. It is therefore helpful to understand the clinical definitions of patent foramen ovale and secundum atrial septal defect.
Now, thanks to medical advances, doctors can use catheter procedures to close secundum ASDs. These are the most common type of ASD. Before a catheter
The upper limit of PFO is the lower limit of ASD . In addition to the PR prolongation, individuals with a primum ASD have a left axis deviation of the QRS complex while those with a secundum ASD have a right axis deviation of the QRS complex. Individuals with a sinus venosus ASD exhibit a left axis deviation of the P wave (not the QRS complex).

PFO vs ASD: Patent foramen ovale is communication between the right / left atria. It is common and a result of a failure for this communication to close when we are born. As a fetus this is needed because the babys lungs are not ready to oxygenate it bypasses the immature lungs of the baby and goes into moms circulation for oxygenating. a PFO results from the failure of fusion of the flap valve of the normal foramen ovale, which is formed by the overlapping septum primum and septum secundum ; an ASD is a true congenital defect in which abnormal development results in missing tissue of the interatrial septum that causes blood flow between atria A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a residual defect or hole between the 2 upper chambers of the heart (atria) that is relatively common. The foetal foramen ovale is a connection between the right and left atria of the heart that allows oxygenated blood from the placenta to bypass the non-functioning lungs and directly enter the left side of the heart, where it can be pumped around the foetal body. 2018-10-08 Anterosuperior views show incomplete development of the interatrial groove in the superior aspect of the septum in type 2 secundum ASD causing a superiorly located defect (curved green arrow) and an intact septum primum compared with type 1 in which the defect is central in the septum primum (curved red arrow) but the superior groove is well formed. 2014-01-11 ASD closure devices are also used for transcatheter closure of the PFO for prevention of paradoxical embolism.
After PFO closure the atria normally are separated by a dividing wall, the interatrial septum. If this septum is defective or absent

In foetal circulation there is normally an opening between the two atria (the upper chambers of the heart) to allow blood to bypass the lungs. PFO size and length tunnel increase with each decade of life .
It is possible to differentiate an ostium secundum ASD from a PFO on CT images.

Transcatheter PFO and ASD occluders consist of a single or paired wire mesh discs covered or filled with polyester or polymer fabric that are placed over the septal defect. Over time, the occlusion system is epithelialized. ASD occlude devices consist of flexible mesh discs delvered via catheter to cover the ASD. Regulatory Status PFO Closure

The septum secundum normally completely covers the right side of the atrial septum except for Jul 17, 2019 A secundum ASD is a hole in the middle of the septum. The hole lets blood flow from one side of the atria to the other.
